Boys and Girls Varsity wrestling traveled down to McAllen this past Friday and Saturday to participate in the South Texas Throwdown.
The tournament consisted of 25 5A and 6A teams from all over south Texas.
The Girls Varsity brought home the TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP for the first time in Johnson Girl’s Wrestling history.
Lead by Diana Jones and Alicia Messer both winning their weight classes. Erin McAlpin getting second. Avery Guerra 3rd, and Sydnie Jacobson falling just short of placing. This is a phenomenal feat considering that these 5 girls only make up half a team (which normal consists of 10 teams). Other teams in the tournament had 8, 9, even 10 girls entered, yet these girls blew through the competition.
The Boys Varsity brought home the Team CHAMPIONSHIP in a landslide.
Lead by Greg Quintanilla who was first at his weight class and named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Garrett Mathews and Fernando Serje were also first. Kaleb McAlexander, Marques McCoy, Enrique Munguia brought home 2nd place. Also wrestling well but just short of top 3 were, Matt Duvalian, Nick Ortiz, Grant Totten, Craig Grove, and Aaron Jayme.
